Personal, business, and payroll checks are good for 6 months (180 days). Some businesses have “void after 90 days” pre-printed on their checks. Most banks will honor those checks for up to 180 days and the pre-printed language is meant to encourage people to deposit or cash a check sooner than later.
Can a check be cashed after 180 days?
Banks don’t have to accept checks that are more than 6 months (180 days) old. That’s according to the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC), a set of laws governing commercial exchanges, including checks. However, banks can still choose to accept your check.
What happens if I deposit a check with a future date?
A signed check immediately becomes legal tender that a bank can deposit or cash before the indicated date on the check. Therefore, a bank will be able to accept a check if it is dated and signed. Ask your bank or credit union for their specific policy for postdated checks in their account disclosures.
When to send out end of year checks?

When to deposit a check after the Date shown?
There are no guarantees that the recipient will do the right thing by depositing the check on or after the date shown. Ideally, give the check only when you have the funds to cover the check amount. Do you have to notify your bank of a post dated check?
You are also required to notify your bank that a check is post dated stating the date of the check, check number, payee, and amount. The rules (or lack of them) do lead to tough calls and they really emphasize the need for communication between the payer and payee when dealing with post-dated checks.
What happens in case of post dated cheque in India?
As far as I know, in India, if bank pays for post-dated cheque before due date, the bank is responsible for the payment. The rules covering post dated checks are in the Uniform Commercial Code Art. 3-113 et seq.. You are also required to notify your bank that a check is post dated stating the date of the check, check number, payee, and amount.
