How can I get help with VA disability?

Writer Nathan Sanders

Go to eBenefits.va.gov to find a Veterans Service Officer who can provide free, expert assistance. Gather supporting documents, including your DD-214, service and private medical records, and buddy statements. Initiate your claim at eBenefits.va.gov or call 1-800-827-1000 for assistance.

Will the VA ever stop paying disability?

VA can stop a veteran’s disability benefits if it severs service connection for the veteran’s disability. In cases where the veteran has been service connected for the condition for ten years or more, VA can only sever when there is a finding of fraud.

Does VA disability reduce SSI?

As with SSDI, veterans may qualify for fast-track processing of SSI applications. VA disability compensation, however, will reduce the size of your SSI payment. That’s because SSI eligibility is based on financial need as well as disability. So if you get more than $794 a month from the VA, you can’t get SSI.

Is the VA still accepting DBQs?

The VA says that DBQs will still be available to medical practitioners, who can use them in performing their official duties, but that they will no longer be available to the general public.

What medical conditions qualify for VA disability?

You may be able to get VA disability benefits for conditions such as:

  • Chronic (long-lasting) back pain resulting in a current diagnosed back disability.
  • Breathing problems resulting from a current lung condition or lung disease.
  • Severe hearing loss.
  • Scar tissue.
  • Loss of range of motion (problems moving your body)
  • Ulcers.

Can a veteran receive both VA disability and Social Security?

Yes, a veteran can receive both VA service-connected disability benefits and Social Security benefits. However, it is important to note that receipt of one does not guarantee receipt of the other and a veteran generally cannot receive both a VA pension (different from disability benefits) and Social Security at the same time.

When does the VA take SSA into consideration?

VA is required to take SSA’s decisions into consideration if they are related to your service-connected disabilities and you make VA aware of them. Once VA is aware of your SSA records, they must attempt to get those records. Those records may contain medical opinions or vocational reports from SSA staff that could help support your TDIU claim.

When do you qualify for Social Security disability?

Unlike VA benefits, Social Security disability benefits do not require the condition you are experiencing to have happened during active duty. If you have developed a condition after or had a pre-existing condition, they may qualify you for Social Security disability benefits.

Can a VA TDIU claim conflict with social security?

If you have been denied TDIU because of an apparent conflict between a Social Security award and a VA TDIU claim, you owe it to yourself to get another opinion on whether you may be eligible. After veterans are discharged from active duty it sometimes takes awhile to reintegrate into civilian life and a suitable civilian job.
