Whether you owe taxes or you’re expecting a refund, you can find out your tax return’s status by:
- Using the IRS Where’s My Refund tool.
- Viewing your IRS account information.
- Calling the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 (Wait times to speak to a representative may be long.)
How often does Where’s My Refund tool update?
The IRS only updates your refund status information once per week on Wednesdays. If you e-file your tax return, wait at least 72 hours from the date the IRS confirms receipt of your return before checking your refund status, and at least three weeks if you mail the return instead.
Why does Where’s My Refund say we have received your tax return and it is being processed?
That means that the IRS has received your tax return and it is being processed. After this the IRS will go from processing your tax return to approved or accepted. Once accepted, your tax refund will be on its way to you.
Is there a where’s my refund tool for the IRS?

What to do if you have not received your tax refund?
If over 21 days since being Accepted by the IRS and the tax refund is still Processing you can call the IRS and speak with an IRS agent concerning your tax refund. When calling the IRS do NOT choose the first option re: “Refund”, or it will send you to an automated phone line.
