If you were expecting a federal tax refund and did not receive it, check the IRS’ Where’s My Refund page. You’ll need to enter your Social Security number, filing status, and the exact whole dollar amount of your refund. You may be prompted to change your address online.
Did not receive my IRS refund check?
If you lost your refund check, you should initiate a refund trace:
- Call us at 800-829-1954 (toll-free) and either use the automated system or speak with an agent.
- However, if you filed a married filing jointly return, you can’t initiate a trace using the automated systems.
Why was my refund less than expected?
If your refund was less than you expected, it may have been reduced by the IRS or a Financial Management Service (FMS) to pay past-due child support, federal agency nontax debts, state income tax obligations, or unemployment compensation debts owed to a state.

Only the IRS & State would know when you will receive your refund. It is taking the IRS longer to process returns since they are closed. They are still processing e-filed returns but the 21 days (business days) is not the standard now due to Covid-19. The IRS is not processing mailed in returns at this time.
