Federal Student Aid recommends that students start researching for scholarships the summer after your junior year of high school. If you have time and energy, you should even start before that. As a rough rule of thumb, public universities are more likely to give more money for National Merit, though there are exceptions. For example, you can get a full ride scholarship at the University of Idaho and the University of Oklahoma. At Loyola University, a private college, you can get $2,000 for being a National Merit finalist.
