The IRS uses a long list of reject codes that cover a number of possible reasons for the rejection. You’ll be able to resubmit your corrected return, and we’ll tell you when it’s accepted by the IRS. When you mail a paper copy of your tax return, the IRS reject codes aren’t applicable.

Why was my federal tax refund accepted but not my state?

Because the IRS is separate from your state’s Department of Revenue, sometimes you will receive your federal refund before your state refund, or vice versa.

The SSN in question also appears as the filer, spouse, or dependent on another tax return for this same year. What to do if your tax return is rejected?

You should receive an explanation of why your return was rejected. If you made a mistake in entering a social security number, a payer’s identification number, omitted a form, or misspelled a name, you can correct these errors and electronically file your tax return again.

What happens if you file tax return with Social Security number?

Once your Social Security Number has been used to file a return, the IRS will automatically flag and reject any additional return filed with that SSN. Once again in 2021, the IRS has provided an extension on the normal date when taxes are due.
