What is W-2 vs w4?
Emily Baldwin
The difference between a W-2 and W-4 is that the W-4 tells employers how much tax to withhold from an employee’s paycheck; the W-2 reports how much an employer paid an employee and how much tax it withheld during the year. Both are required IRS tax forms.
What does a W-4 tell you?
Form W-4 tells you, as the employer, the employee’s filing status, multiple jobs adjustments, amount of credits, amount of other income, amount of deductions, and any additional amount to withhold from each paycheck to use to compute the amount of federal income tax to deduct and withhold from the employee’s pay.
Who has to fill out a W-4?
The IRS requires every employee to fill out a W-4, and your employer probably required you to complete it your first day on the job. It’s important to get your W-4 right to avoid paying too much or little in tax. If you don’t withhold enough tax, you will owe a tax bill when you file your tax return.
Should I claim 0 or 1 on my w4?
By placing a “0” on line 5, you are indicating that you want the most amount of tax taken out of your pay each pay period. If you wish to claim 1 for yourself instead, then less tax is taken out of your pay each pay period. If your income exceeds $1000 you could end up paying taxes at the end of the tax year.
