When can you separate chicks from the hen?
Emily Baldwin
Nature dictates the optimum time for seperation of chicks from their mothers, as you state from four to six weeks chicks are sufficiently feathered not to require brooding from their mother, although she may still do so at night, and this is usually the time she is coming back into lay ready for her next clutch.
How long do chicks stay with their mum?
Chicks are born almost fully autonomous, able to peck for food and drink water, their only real problem is staying warm and safe from predators or other larger chickens and of course just the normal business of learning what is and is not safe to eat or do. They’ll stay close to mom for about a month to 6 weeks.
Why does a mother hen pecking her chicks?
The particular reason the mother hen pecked her chick is unknown to me as is the cause of death for the other two chicks. Cannibalism is a fairly common problem with chickens; this can be caused by over crowding, high light intensity, amino acid imbalance, and many other stress factors.
Can you mix baby chicks with older chickens?
It’s generally advisable to introduce at least three baby chicks at a time to the older hens. Chickens are social creatures, and baby chicks do better in a flock when they help each other and grow up together. When purchasing baby chicks, it’s recommended to match the newcomers to your current flock.
Do I need to separate baby chicks?
Depending on the flock’s temperament, it may be best to separate the chicks from the rest of your flock. Most free-range flocks get along great and show no aggression with the baby chicks. But every experience is different, so introduce the new chicks carefully when they are several weeks old.

On the 21st day expect chicks and a very protective mother hen. She’ll keep her babies warm, and offer an opportunity to observe her parenting. It is important to keep baby chicks away from mature birds, which sometimes will kill them if they get the chance.
Do baby chicks follow their mom?
They follow warmth which is usually a light or another chicken. So theyll stay with their mom to keep warm usually.
Will hens peck baby chicks?
Sometimes in cases of extreme stress, the older chickens will pick on the younger chicks simply because they’re stressed out. Issues of stress come from things like if the coop is too small, if there’s not enough food, if there are too many roosters; that kind of thing can contribute to too much stress.
Will hen protect chicks?
Mother hens are very protective of their chicks. They keep them close with a series of special clucks and warn them of any dangers as well as showing them which foods are good and how to find insects. It is sometimes necessary to seperate broody hens from each other as they can be very agressive.
Will other hens kill baby chicks?
Yes, they can and will eat newly hatched chicks if they get into the habit of doing so similar to egg eating. We had a probably with a broody hen turning and killing her chicks in the same way.
When do you separate a Mama hen from her chicks?
If that is the case, you’ll simple have to move the baby chicks to a brooder. If you leave the mama in with the chicks, and she doesn’t want to be there, she may turn on the chicks and start killing them. When a hen goes broody, she stops laying eggs. But after the chicks have hatched out there will come a point where she begins laying eggs again.
When does a chicken become an adult hen?
From young female chicken to adult hen Some say that a chicken can be called a hen when it has laid its first egg. Others argue that it has nothing to do with egg laying, but that the transition to a hen happens when the chicken is one year old. This is quite similar to the discussion about when a girl becomes an adult woman.
When do chicks wean from the mother hen?
It does seem that single chicks stay attached to mom (male or female chicks) for whatever reason. One of mine started weaning them at 21 days (it was June/July) and the other the other didn’t wean until 9 weeks old (Oct-Dec). Not sure how much of it was due to the time of year- or just differences in the hens themselves.
How old is a chicken when it lays its first egg?
The age in which a chicken lays its first egg varies depending on the breed and some environmental and living conditions. It’s not something you can take as an accurate gauge of their age. But it will give you a general idea. With that said, most hens start laying between 20-24 weeks of age.
