Why is cosmetic animal testing cruel?
Emma Jordan
Testing cosmetics on animals is both cruel and unnecessary because companies can already create innovative products using thousands of ingredients that have a history of safe use and do not require any additional testing.
Is animal testing on cosmetics necessary?
The FD&C Act does not specifically require the use of animals in testing cosmetics for safety, nor does the Act subject cosmetics to FDA premarket approval. In some cases, after considering available alternatives, companies may determine that animal testing is necessary to assure the safety of a product or ingredient.
What are the disadvantages of animal testing?
What Are the Cons of Animal Research?
- Many of the items that are tested are never used.
- It can be an expensive practice.
- It may not offer valid results.
- Many facilities are exempt from animal welfare laws.
- Animals don’t need to be the “only” method of research.
- Poor research practices invalidate the data obtained.
Why we shouldn’t use animals for testing?
Although humans often benefit from successful animal research, the pain, the suffering, and the deaths of animals are not worth the possible human benefits. Therefore, animals should not be used in research or to test the safety of products. First, animals’ rights are violated when they are used in research.
How are cosmetics actually tested on animals-animal?
While in Australia we don’t animal test cosmetics here onshore, Australia does test pharmaceutical ingredients on animals and these ingredients are able to be used by cosmetic companies to manufacture their cosmetics. Also many cosmetics companies can have ingredients and products manufactured offshore in Asia and tested on animals over there.
Why is it important to use animal testing?
It remains the responsibility of the manufacturer to substantiate the safety of both ingredients and finished cosmetic products prior to marketing. Animal testing by manufacturers seeking to market new products may be used to establish product safety.
What happens to animals that are used for chemical testing?
These tests result in several chemical and mechanical injuries including bleeding and ulcers, and most times even blindness. These types of tests include rats and mice, and are based on exposure to dangerous chemicals by mouth, inhalation or skin.
Do you have to pay for animal testing?

For instance, China requires animal testing for any imported products before they can be sold on its soil. So in order to get their products on Chinese shelves, many US companies pay to conduct the tests.
