Some students may find they don’t need to claim all of their credits to reduce their income tax to zero and as a result, students can transfer the unused amounts to a spouse or partner or (grand)parent, or carry forward unclaimed amounts (including former education and textbook amounts) indefinitely.

Can unused tax credits be carried forward?

No part of the unused credit for any year attributable to any credit can be carried back to any tax year before the first tax year for which that credit was first allowable.

Do tuition tax credits carry over?

Note: Alberta, Ontario, and Saskatchewan have discontinued their provincial tuition tax credits. If you’re a resident of any of these provinces and you’ve got unused provincial tuition amounts, you’ll still be able to claim them or carry forward these amounts for use on future returns.

Can You claim last year’s tuition on your tax return?

You can’t choose to only claim a portion of the credit. When completing your return, you must include last year’s unused amount (found on your Notice of Assessment) and any eligible tuition amounts from this year. If you have significant dividend and/or foreign tax credits you may not be able to benefit from all of your tuition.
